The portraits were created to represent five people that are doing things to help spread identity and compassion. The original series portraits that were done were of Thich Nhat Hanh (Buddhist Monk), Marianne Pearl (woman with the wavy hair), Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo`ole (larger Hawaiian), Maxi Jazz (lead singer of Faithless), and MalalaYousafzai (girl wearing the head wrap). The overall composition was originally meant to be put in a circular layout to represent something similar to a lotus flower. In Buddhism the lotus flower is used to represent overcoming hardship and reaching enlightenment.
